Reviews and Testimonials for Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box

(4 stars)  This “paranormal romance” game delivers exactly what you’d expect: a fun and fantastical adventure that stars Dela, a woman with psychic abilities, who buys a mysterious riddle box on the streets of Beijing… Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box is a very good HOG [hidden-object game] with plenty of minigames, an enjoyable story and high production values, including impressive artwork and music.

I am delighted to report that Tiger Eye is eminently playable and genuinely fun, even for a pinball-era gimp like me. You’re not required to run around fighting in the street or ripping out your opponent’s spine; instead you face a series of fun and very interesting puzzles, riddles and problem-solving challenges that you work through on different levels as the game follows the story in the novel… The game graphics are terrific; the narrators’ voices are perfect for the characters they portray, and I enjoyed the soundtrack so much I’m going to purchase it.

Tiger Eye Part 1: Curse of the Riddle Box has an engaging story with beautiful artwork and is fun… If you or a friend is a Marjorie M. Liu fan don’t miss out on this game.”

(4 stars) I haven’t read the book yet, and yet is the operative word.  After playing this game, I really, really want to… I ended up enjoying [the cut scenes] immensely and found myself easily caught up in the story and romance between Dela and Hari.

If romance stories of any type are your thing, you’re pretty much required to give Tiger Eye a try. And even if they’re not, the game delivers a sturdy hidden object experience with loads of mini-games and some great puzzles to complete.

“The game…was really fun.  Dela and Hari’s story plays out through a series of puzzles that can be somewhat challenging.  This is just the first part of what will be a two-part game and I can’t wait to play the rest.  I think gamers and Liu fans will all be pleased with this first release from PassionFruit.  I hope they’ll have more to come in the near future.  It would definitely be nice to see more games based on books.  It’s always seemed like a perfect match to me…Note that you don’t have to read Tiger Eye in order to play the game, but if you’re a Liu fan already, you’ll be delighted to hear that the author herself penned the script for the game.”

Inspired by [Marjorie M. Liu’s] book Tiger Eye, [this] romance-based computer game takes you to the beautiful setting of Beijing’s Dirt Market as it leads you on a sensual journey with a rather sexy leading man (rather than your typical hypersexualized women). One of the first to target women between the ages of 25 to 65, the game features voiced-acted story development along with the custom-made soundtrack and music by composer Matt Sayre, to accompany the brain teasers and logic puzzles that’ll get your blood going.

I found Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box Part 1 to be a really entertaining game… even this unromantic male was intrigued enough by the puzzles and pleased that this simply constructed game had a story, unlike many of its contemporaries, that I kept on playing long after I thought I would quit.  …I recommend this game to anyone who likes a good story, or who likes to play videogames but lacks significant time or money to devote to them. Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box Part 1 is reasonably priced, and easy to pick up and put down again at anytime. Casual gamers, romance readers, and the time-pressed puzzle gamer will all find something to like in this first offering from Passionfruit Games.

The story is top notch and the dialogue is succulent and moves the story along. I like the idea that the author had a hand in helping transition her book into a game. It definitely shows in the game. The art in the cut scenes were pretty well produced and worked very well with the overall look of the game. The voice acting was also pretty good. Plus, the game, or rather the first episode (the game is being split up into two episodes), is affordably priced at $6.99.

“[A] nice feature is that the game automatically saves each time you quit, which means it’s easy to come back after an extended break. I would play a few minutes of the game in between writing reviews or other tasks; there isn’t anything to forget or to have to relearn so this is a good option for people who don’t have time to sit down and play a game regularly.  The cut scenes and music are well done and didn’t take an unreasonable amount of time to load…any way you slice it, this is a good deal on a pretty fun, easygoing game… I have a long car ride coming up and you can bet I’ll be revisiting this game to pass the time.”

“…though I know the romance titles, I’ve never been tempted to read one- until now. If the book is even half as good as the game was, I’ll definitely be recommending it to people, because wow! A well-made HOG [hidden-object game], with a compelling storyline that left me nearly howling for more when I finished it… I can’t wait for the next part to come out. Also, awesome artwork, the puzzles were diverse and just challenging enough to keep me interested… And I like the dynamic between the characters. Thanks so much for this awesome game!”

Previews from an early review copy

“Gamezebo spent some hands-on time with a pre-release build of the game and we can tell you that this isn’t your usual sappy, throwaway love story. Be prepared for a plot that has some kick to it, with gameplay to match… With gameplay already looking solid, we can’t wait to check in again in April to see Dela and Hari really come to life in the final product.”

“Although I really do enjoy hidden picture games, what makes Tiger Eye: Curse of the Riddle Box a great game is that it offers so much more beyond just hidden pictures. There are visual puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, word games, codes to decipher, and more. There are so many varieties of games that I have not felt even a hint of boredom.”

“Believe me for a game not quite finished (the dialog areas were still drawings) this is such a great game… it keeps moving at a wonderful pace, not too slow that you get bored, yet not to fast that you feel like you are rushing. This game has the perfect mix of hidden object fun and mini games.”
